Members of Parliament have begun attending a three-day post-election seminar aiming to enlighten them on subjects relating to their accountability to the people.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly, the seminar will be conducted by Speaker Samuel Sitta in Dodoma.

The statement said participants would deliberate in the role of presiding officers, procedures in the house and the development as well as the role of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

The role of the members, standing orders and standing committees will also be covered.

The statement said the MPs will on the second day of the seminar discuss the role of the opposition, financial scrutiny of the Executive and women in parliament.

’On February 22, the MPs will again take on other interesting topics that will include privileges, members’ interests, ethics and accountability as well as the relationship between the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary,’ the statement added.

The seminar which is funded by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, CPA, in co-operation with the Tanzania National Assembly would also involve MPs from neighbouring countries, including Kenya’s Parliament Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo and the CPA Secretary General Hon Denis Marshall as the main resource persons.

’Others will be the Ghana National Assembly Opposition Leader Hon Alaban Bagbin and Ms Deborah Deller from Ontario, Canada,’ the statement concluded.
