Police in Dar es Salaam have arrested 57 people, suspected to be hardcore criminals and illegal immigrants in a major crackdown on armed robbery and illegal aliens.

Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana told reporters yesterday that out of those netted, 11 were suspected hardcore criminals and the rest were foreign nationals who had been living in the country illegally.

The police, according to Tibaigana, also impounded two firearms and 23 rounds of ammunition. The firearms are alleged to have been used in a series of armed robberies in the country.

The RPC said the suspects were arrested during an intensive police raid last week in parts of Dar es Salaam city.

He said that, after being interrogated, two suspects admitted to possessing firearms – a rifle and shotgun – illegally. The suspected gangsters, he said, surrendered the firearms to Chang’ombe and Mchikichini police stations.

Tibaigana said illegal immigrants nabbed in guesthouses had no travel documents or residence permits.

He said that, of the foreign nationals, five were Kenyans, six Zimbabweans, one South African, three Ugandans, one Japanese, 26 Somalis and three nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

’These people were arrested in police operations across the three municipalities of Dar es Salaam,’ noted Tibaigana.

In the meantime, the RPC said nine people have been arrested for being in possession of hard drugs – heroine, bhang and illicit liquor.

The RPC called on wananchi to volunteer information about armed robbery suspects.
