President Jakaya Kikwete has called on Tanzanians to recognize the contribution made by the former Head of State, Benjamiun Mkapa, and lashed out at individuals who criticize him.

The President made the remarks during the commemoration of 100 years of MajiMaji War held on Monday at the national level at MajiMaji grounds here.

People who criticize Mkapa fuel conflicts and divisions within the party and the government system, he said, and urged the wananchi to ignore such people.

’’These people cannot succeed. I want people to ignore them, as their claims have no basis,’’ Kikwete said when addressing hundreds of people who turned out to witness the event.

He said even the media could hardly manage to play down successful stories recorded by President Mkapa in many aspects during his tenure.

Meanwhile, Songea residents reminded the President of the shortage of fertilizers and requested him to employ all means possible to ensure fertilizers reach the farmers this year.

On his part, Kikwete pledged to work on the problem despite suggestions from some people that fertilizer was not needed in the areas during this period.

On hunger, the President said the government would continue to distribute food to the needy.
