The National Bank of Commerce Ltd (NBC) has joined hands with Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited in raising funds to alleviate hunger caused by drought in various parts of the country.
A Standard Chartered Bank statement issued yesterday said the bank, NBC and other organisations jointly launched the Okoa Maisha (save lives) campaign two weeks ago whereby Standard Chartered opened an account through which individuals and companies could channel funds for purchasing food aid.
During the launch, Standard Chartered Tanzania CEO Hemen Shah said the food shortage issue in the country needed immediate intervention in order to assist the affected population.
He said the Okoa Maisha campaign was a timely and worthy cause and called upon individuals, corporate companies and other banks to join in the campaign by contributing generously.
NBC is the first bank to join hands with Standard Chartered in the Okoa Maisha Campaign and has opened a relief account called the Okoa Maisha Account with the number 011103026277.
NBC staff and customers countrywide could make contributions, the statement further said.
NBC Marketing Manager William Kallaghe said the bank had been closely following the news on food shortages in the country and felt that it had a role to play in assisting the affected population by joining Standard Chartered in providing a wider network through which Tanzanians could channel their contributions.
The funds collected by the two banks will be used to purchase food which will be handed over to the government for distribution to the worst hit areas.
Standard Chartered launched the relief account with a donation of 10m/-. The Okoa Maisha Account number at Standard Chartered is 0102020668500 and both accounts are operational until March 30, this year, when the banks will announce the donors and the amount collected.
