Six top officials of the African Development Bank (AfDB) are in the country for a four-day study tour scheduled to begin today.

The delegation is scheduled to meet ministers and senior government officials to deliberate on issues pertinent to AfDB interventions in the country and discuss ways in which the Bank can assist Tanzania in its future development efforts.

A statement issued by the bank’s office in Dar es Salaam says that the delegation will also hold discussions with development partners on aid coordination and harmonisation as well as visit AfDB-funded projects to ascertain development effectiveness.

The officials and countries they represent are Cynthis Perry (USA) Gerald Zirimwabagabo (Rwanda, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Seychelles), Francois Arsenault (Canada, China, Korea, Spain, Kuwait), Phiwayinkosi Ginindza (Swaziland, South Africa, Malawi, Maurituus, Lesotho, Zambia), Barminas Kukuri (Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe), and Fouad Samir (Morocco, Togo, Tunisia).

The statement says AfDB established its Tanzania Country Office in October 2004.

’The Bank, however, commenced operations in the country in 1971 and has since financed 84 operations amounting to about US$1.3 billion. Currently there are 12 ongoing operations totalling approximately US$347 million,’ it adds.

Ongoing operations cut across several sectors, namely social sector (27.2 per cent) agriculture sector (25.0 per cent), transport (23.3 per cent), public utilities (22.5 per cent) and multi-sector (2.0 per cent).
