Women’s Day to be marked regionally

By Lydia Shekighenda

Unlike in the past when International Women’s Day was marked at the national level only, this year’s celebrations will be held from the regional level next week, the government said yesterday.

The Deputy Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, Dr Batilda Burian, said each region would mark the day on March 8.

’’Unlike other previous years, this year, each region will mark the day according to their plans and available resources’’ she said.

She said that the plan to celebrate International Women’s Day regionally followed the government’s directive that the occasion be marked in every region once every five years.

’’This would provide the chance for evaluating successes and find solutions for challenges faced by women in the society,’’ Dr Burian said.

She said the day gave women, political parties, the government and non-governmental organisations the chance to find solutions to problems faced by women with a view to bringing about gender equality.

’’Women contribute greatly in the development of the country thus they are supposed to be recognised and valued,’’ the deputy minister said.

She urged regional and district authorities to play their role to make the celebrations a success.

This year’s theme is Women in Decision Making, Equality and Poverty Eradication.
