Tanzania has received 2 million euros (about 2.84bn/-) from the government of Italy for financing the HIV/Aids control programme.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Italys a mbassador to Tanzania, Marcello Griccioli, said the support was earmarked for both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar to finance health care programmes for people living with HIV/Aids.
Griccioli, who signed on behalf of the Italian government, said Italy decided to support the programme because it was aware of the HIV/Aids social costs.
He said the grant would be extended through the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and would benefit projects implemented under the National Aids Control Programme.
Finance Permanent Secretary, Gray Mgonja, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Tanzanian government, said the funds would be spent in Dodoma and Iringa regions in Tanzania Mainland and Pemba in Zanzibar.
He said the support would focus on providing training services and health care among people living with HIV/Aids.
The support would be supervised by the Ministry of Health to ensure that it brought about positive results, Mgonja added.
