Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Saidi Ally Mwema has appealed to Tanzanians to co-operate with the police Force to combat rising crime.
Speaking to reporters immediately after being sworn-in by President Jakaya Kikwete at the State House yesterday, IGP Mwema, (53), said that success in his new position depends on the support of the people.
There can be no security for citizens without co-operation between the police and the public.
He said that he was gratified that the public had expressed confidence in him upon his appointment.
I thank Tanzanians for their show of confidence. This shows that they are ready to support me, Mwema said.
Outgoing IGP Omar Mahita said that he would be available to give advice to the police force whenever need arose.
Mahita said that he would also co-operate with the new police boss and the police in general in the struggle against spiralling crime levels.
Prime Minister Edward Lowassa, cabinet ministers, senior police officers and senior government officials attended the swearing-in ceremony.
