By Nico Mwaibale, PST, Mbeya

Three people died on the spot on Saturday when the lorry they were travelling in hit a stationary truck on the Mbeya-Iringa highway in Mbarali District.

Mbeya regional police chief Suleiman Kova named the dead as Evarist Nziku, who was driving the ill-fated lorry, Laban Haule and John Kabage.

He said the accident took place near Mambi Village when the Scania lorry driven by Nziku crashed into a tipper that had stalled in the middle of the road after developing mechanical problems.

The driver of the tipper was injured and admitted to Mbeya Regional Hospital in a critical condition.

Kova said there were no signs to warn approaching motorists that there was a stationary vehicle ahead.

”There was no way the lorry driver could have known that there was a stationary vehicle in the middle of the road ahead because there was no sign…the stationary tipper materialised just as the lorry was coming out of a bend and there was no time to avoid it,” the RPC added.

He said the driver of the tipper would appear in court on a charge of causing deaths through negligence once he was well enough.

Meanwhile, a Mbozi District resident committed suicide by taking a pesticide at Ikonya Village on Saturday.

Kova said it had not been established why 20-year-old Vasta Mbazu decided to take his own life.
