Japan govt gives 6.6bn/- for Mkukuta

The Japanese government has extended to the Tanzania government 6.6bn/- (equivalent to Yen 600,000,000) grant to support the National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction (MKUKUTA).

Speaking during the signing ceremony for the support held in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Gray Mngonja said the grant offered under the General Budget Support (GBS) would enable Tanzania to further strengthen the ability to implement MKUKUTA.

He said part of the grant and its accrued interest worth Yen 500,000 would be spent on the pooled fund for poverty monitoring system for the 2006/07 budget.
He also said the remaining amount would contribute to poverty reduction budget support facility for the same fiscal year.

He said the government would ensure that the funds go to the intended purposes only.

He added: ’’At the same time, I would like to reaffirm Tanzanian Government’s commitment to the pursuit of long term sound economic policies, good governance, and accountability, as well as its commitment to maintain and promote further the partnership and friendly relations with the government and the people of Japan.’’

On his part, the Ambassador of Japan to Tanzania, Katsuya Ikeda said that Japan had offered such budget support in line with the long-term agreement among development partners to support Tanzania’s efforts to reduce poverty.

Ambassador Ikeda said his government would continue to support the National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction to enable the country attains its objectives.

The grant agreement was signed by the Japanese envoy on behalf of government of Japan, while Mgonja signed on behalf of Tanzania government.
