Dar es Salaam police yesterday made public 30 names of people they suspect are behind armed robberies that have rocked the country in the past two months.

On the list are businessmen and ordinary citizens, who police said were arrested in a crackdown on armed robbery.

Two of the prominent businessmen on the list, Alex Massawe and Raymond Shauri, were arrested last week in connection with armed robberies.

Massawe appeared before the Kisutu Resident Magistrate yesterday.

Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Alfred Tibaigana said yesterday that they were still interrogating the remaining suspects and that they would be taken to court once the investigations are complete.

He said the police would forge ahead and smoke out suspected criminals regardless of their social status or political orientation in a fresh drive to crack down on criminal activities.

Apart from Massawe and Shauri, Tibaigana identified the other suspects as Nilesh Ashviri Suchak, a businessman of Indian origin who stays on Sikukuu Street in Kariakoo, Robert Peter or Baba Jack, a businessman from Salasala, Said Omar or Pozeni a businessman from Gongo la Mboto and Mrisho Hussein alias Kamchuchu, a resident of Ulongoni in Gongo la Mboto.

The others are: Omar Ally alias Zengeni, a businessman and resident of Gongo la Mboto, Shukuru Hamis, a bus turn-boy who resides in Gongo la Mboto, Marijani Marwa, a mason from Gongo la Mboto, Ramadhani Makenja, a jobseeker from Uwanja wa Ndege and Sultan Juma, a jobseeker from Pugu.

Samson Jemana, a jobseeker from Mbagala, Ramadhani Mlungo, a witchdoctor from Vingunguti, Sadick Richard, a businessman from Kimara, Seleman Ramadhani, a businessman from Manzese and Abdul Shomari, a businessman from Manzese are on the list of armed robbery suspects.

Tibaigana also named Wilfred John, businessman from Manzese, Joel Patrick, a businessman from Kijitonyama, Ramadhani Mohamed, a businessman from Tandale, Bartazar Edson, a businessman from Mbezi Temboni, Bashir Ezekiel from Yombo and Iddi Shabani from Jet Club.

The list also includes Magesa Masatu, a businessman from Mbagala, John Eilliam, a businessman from Ubungo, Seleman Hussein, businessman from Manzese, Yusuf Twaha, a jobseeker from Manzese, Said Tossi, businessman from Manzese and Mohammed Ramadhan, businessman from Kimara.

Other suspects are Katema Ally, businessman from Kimara and Fidelis Max, businessman from Mbezi.

Tibaigana called on the pubic to forward names of suspected criminals to beef up the government efforts to fight insecurity and protect people and property.

Reports said President Kikwete’s approach of asking people to forward the names of crime suspects directly to him had contributed to intensified operation that led to arrest of hardcore criminals, which could hardly be touched in the past.
