Journalists must strive for excellence in their profession for credibility, the government said yesterday.

Speaking during a tour of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports, President Jakaya Kikwete, exhorted media practitioners be it in state or private organisations to perfect their craft if the end-users (readers, viewers/listeners) of the information they disseminate are to take them seriously.

President Kikwete said at the ministry’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that existing mass communication and journalism colleges should be equipped to produce competent professionals.

’’These colleges should be able to produce competent journalists and not half-baked professionals,’’ he said.

He said a qualified journalist should be able to effectively perform his work and make use of his/her skills to get accurate information.

’’I don’t want to see quacks in journalism,’’ he said.
The President told journalists to spend more time writing on developmental issues for the national advancement.

He directed ministries to give journalists the information they require for public consumption.

The President assured the Press of freedom, but cautioned that it should not be used to breach other people’s rights and freedom.

’’The freedom of information I’m talking about does not include classified information,’’ he said.
