Slow supply of materials delay repair work...

Repair work on the bridge that links Dar es Salaam and the northern zone is progressing at a snail’s speed because of slow supply of materials by the Tanzania National Road Agency (Tanroads).

Flush-floods washed away the bridge that links the two sides at Lugoba Township at Chalinze, Coast region, on Tuesday after a heavy downpour.

Head of the team that is building the bridge, Col Benedict Kitenga said yesterday that the progress had been hampered by slow supply of materials.
”There are two groups involved in the repair of the bridge.

The army is providing the manpower and expertise, while Tanroads is supposed to supply building materials.

However, up to now we are yet to get the materials such as 60 decking and 39 panels. Also a number of pins are still missing. This has affected our pace,’’ he said.

He said that the army had enough manpower, which, if Tanroads provided the necessary materials on time, the bridge would have been completed within a very short time.

’’We are working day and night. Yesterday we spent the night here to ensure that this bridge is completed within a short period,’’ he said.

Bagamoyo District Commissioner Hawa Ngulume who was also present at the site said Tanroads had assured her that the materials would come on time.

’’I have already talked to the Tanroads chief executive and he had assured me that all the materials would be here today (yesterday). If we get the materials, the job will be done within a short time,’’ she said.

Contacted yesterday evening, the Tanroads Coast Regional Manager, Happiness Mgalula, said the progress was ’’good’’ and the link between the two regions would be restored as soon as possible the repair work is completed.

Asked about why the materials are not delivered on time, Mgalula said that the problem had already been solved.

’’I’m on the site now. All the material is here. I want to assure the public that any time from tomorrow (today) the bridge will be completed and the link between Dar es Salaam and the northern zone restored,’’ she said yesterday afternoon during a telephone interview.
