CHAWATA faces 124m/- budget deficit

By Amri Lugungulo, PST

The Tanzania Association of the Disabled (CHAWATA) faces a 124m/- deficit in its budget despite receiving each year, 250,000/- in subsidies from the government and grants amounting to 26m/- from the government of Sweden, it has been learnt.

CHAWATA National Chairman, Audax Barthazar, told PST yesterday that the association faced financial problems because its annual expenditure far exceeds its income.

According to Barthazar, the association’s current annual budget was estimated at 150m/-, which would have at least enabled the association operate smoothly.

’’If the government wants to help combat poverty amongst the disabled persons in the country, it should increase its subsidy to CHAWATA,’’ he said.

The Chairman added that it was not fair for the government to continue subsidizing the association with 250,000/- per year.

’’This might have been sufficient subsidy in the 1960s, but not now as the amount has turned to be not enough to meet operation costs of the association,’’ he said.

It was amazing, he said, to see the government assigning officials to audit the subsidy given to the association, considering that the amount so audited could be much smaller than the allowances paid to the auditors.

’’If the government is keen in helping the associations fight against poverty, it should fully facilitate its operations,’’ he said.
