Women in the country, particularly in rural areas are capable of running income-generating projects if both the government and Non Government Organizations support them.
Speaking recently during the International Womens Day marked in Kisarawe District in Coast Region, Plan Internationals Community Development Facilitator, Angela Shija, said there is a need to support women in development and social activities as one of the strategies for poverty alleviation.
Shija said women, particularly in rural areas need to be given support so that they can manage to generate their own income through the establishment of various projects.
Most women in rural areas fail to generate their own income because they lack good plans and strategies governing the projects, she said.
She said women in many societies have been discriminated because of poverty and dependence on men.
In order to bring about equality in the society, women should be given both material and moral support so that they could manage to run income generating projects.
Elaborating on the food security project sponsored by Plan International, Shija said that some women have been able to generate their own income through training and material support provided by the organization.
She said Plan International is working hard to expand the services to undeserved communities especially women in rural areas in order to empower them.
Speaking at the same event, Lydia Jacob, Chairperson of Upendo Development group said that it was time for women to be self-reliant.
She said women should not be satisfied with their achievements rather they should strive and work hard to enhance their economic development.
