Jackson ole Nemetemi, one of 14 people accused of robbing the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) Moshi Branch of 5.3bn/-, has said in court that he was not in Moshi when the alleged robbery took place in 2004.
Ole Nemetemi told the Moshi Resident Magistrates Court during cross-examination by State Attorney Augustine Shio that he was in Dar es Salaam on a business trip when the bank was allegedly robbed on May 21, 2004.
He said he left Arusha on May 16, 2004 in the company of fellow businessman Moses Laizer with whom he drove to Dar es Salaam in a Suzuki Escudo vehicle with the registration T 728 AAD.
When we arrived in Dar es Salaam, we checked in at AM Hotel (1988) Ltd where we stayed for a number of days before leaving for Arusha on May 22, 2004, ole Nemetemi, the first accused in the trial, told High Court Judge Amir Mruma, who is presiding over the case.
He said he took five rooms for himself and his business colleagues and was issued a single receipt, which he tendered in court as an exhibit.
However, ole Nemetemi said he did not recognise the AM Hotel (1988) Ltd receipt book with the serial numbers 10101 to 10200 produced in court by the prosecution, adding that it was the hotels managing director who could say whether or not the receipt book was genuine.
The receipt book showed that the rooms that ole Nemetemi claimed to have booked during his stay in Dar es Salaam were occupied by people other than himself and his colleagues.
Ole Nemetemi told the court that he took to Dar es Salaam several pieces of tanzanite which he sold to a person he identified only as Mkorea.
The accuseds cross-examination by the prosecution is scheduled to continue today.
