36 JKT men charged over Dar violence

Thirty-Six National Service (JKT) servicemen appeared in a Dar es Salaam court yesterday in connection with last week’s violence at various daladala termini in the city.

The servicemen, who were all clad in JKT uniform, were arraigned at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court on charges of conspiracy, causing grievous bodily harm and criminal damage to property.

The prosecutor, Assistant Inspector Bennet Kipasika, told presiding magistrate Farida Mohamed that the accused conspired to injure innocent people and destroy property in Ilala District on March 9, this year.

Kipasika also alleged the accused beat and seriously injured several people, including Waziri Swedi, Marno Mathias and Kassim Fango, in Ubungo, Kinondoni District on March 9, this year.

The accused were also charged with maliciously damaging property by smashing the windscreens and rearview mirrors of vehicles belonging to Ramadhan Bur and Khadija Ramadhan, respectively.

They denied the charges, but only four were released immediately after meeting bail conditions.

The court ordered each accused to produce two sureties, one of whom should be a public servant, Each surety was also required to sign a 500,000/- bond and produce official letters from their employers.

The prosecution said investigations were incomplete and the case was adjourned to March 27, this year.
