Tanzania has embarked on a major environmental conservation programme intended to protect the endangered forests and plant species in the country’s rich natural resources on the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal areas.

Conservation International through the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) and four East African organizations will execute the programme, planned to cover Tanzania and parts of the neighboring Kenya.

Details of the programme was revealed in a press statement issued as the parties involved are set to sign the contract documents of the agreement today.

The investment is focused on the Eastern Arc Mountains and the Coastal Forests endowed with at least 1,500 species of plants and 50 species of reptiles that is found nowhere else on earth.

Other wildlife unique to this area includes the Sanje mangabey, the Mountain dwarf galago and the golden-rumped elephant shrew. The forests once covered over 23,000 square kilometres.
