Armed gangsters on Sunday raided the home of prominent evangelist Dr Gertrude Rwakatare and grabbed 345,000/-, police said yesterday.

However, one of the thugs was apprehended by members of the public and beaten to death, acting Dar es Salaam Zone Commander Venance Tossi told reporters.

He said four gangsters arrived at Dr Rwakatare’s home posing as visitors and asked to see her, adding that the security guard at the gate did not suspect anything untoward and let them in.

But once they were inside, they attacked the guard before ransacking the house and taking 345,000/-.

The robbers fired once in the air as they were leaving the house, attracting the attention of members of the public who were attending a soccer match at a nearby ground.

Tossi said the public gave chase and apprehended one of the robbers, whom they beat to death. His accomplices escaped.

The dead suspect was later identified at 34-year-old Said Ali, a resident of Dar es Salaam’s Mwananyamala area.

It was not immediately clear whether Dr Rwakatare was at home during the raid.

Tossi said police had launched a manhunt for the robbers who were still at large.
