Police arrested yesterday three suspected gangsters who allegedly attempted to abduct and rob a businessman at Mnazi Mmoja in Dar es Salaam.
One of the gangsters was in full police uniform and carried handcuffs, raising suspicion that the suspects may have colluded with members of the force in an apparent attempt to abduct the businessman.
Acting Police Commissioner for Dar es Salaam Special Zone Venance Tossi was non-committal over possible police collusion in the robbery or abduction attempt that occurred yesterday in the morning.
Were still investigating how the gangsters came by the police uniforms and handcuffs, Tossi told reporters.
He identified the suspects as Anderson Makoroso, Rajab Abdallah and Mwalimu Iddi, all residents of Dar es Salaam.
He said that four people who were in a saloon car arrived at Samir Ibrahims shop at Kitumbini in Mnazi Mmoja and went straight to the businessman, one Massawe.
He ordered him out of the shop and threatened to arrest him.
Makoroso took out the handcuffs and ordered Massawe to surrender, Tossi said.
Suddenly, he added, the two more people who were in the vehicle entered the shop and took him to the car that was packed outside the shop.
The suspects did not steal anything because they were attacked by an angry mob and arrested by the police who were on patrol in the area.
He said the police are looking for the owner of the vehicle used during the incident.
He added that the car is registered in the name of Ayub Lubawa, a resident of Sinza in Dar es Salaam.
We are still looking for the contact of Lubawa to shed light on how his car was involved in the incident, said Tossi.
