Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) has forecast that coastal regions will this week experience torrential rainfall and thunderstorms.

The weathermen said the rainfall is likely to result in destruction and warned people living in flood-prone areas to move to safer places.

TMA Acting Director General M. Lukando said in a statement yesterday that, there have been abrupt weather changes over the Indian Ocean and along the coast that could result in heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Lukando said the most affected areas would be Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Coast regions. The others are Unguja and Pemba and northeastern highlands.

The statement said torrential rains and thunderstorms would cease today in these regions.
Last Friday, TMA issued a statement saying the long rains season had started in most parts of the country, but cautioned that it would not last long.

TMA Director General Dr Mohamed Mhita said there would be average amounts of rainfall in many parts of the country.

Dr Mhita advised farmers to plant drought resistant crops and early maturing food crops.
According to Dr Mhita, Kagera, Kigoma, Dar es Salaam, Unguja, Pemba, Tanga and Coast were to receive high rainfall in March.

As for Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions, he said the rains were expected to start in the last week of March or the beginning of April.
TMA also predicted that the current spell of rainfall would end next month.
