The Vice President, Dr Ali Mohammed Shein, has directed the Dodoma regional administration to pay immediately the 150m/- debt the local council owes the Munguri Bridge contractor.
Speaking to Dodoma regional leaders in his final public functions after touring the project in Kondoa district, Dr Shein said it would be a shame for the government to be sued because of a small debt that has been outstanding because of the laxity of local government officials.
Kondoa District Engineer Abraham Mkangala told the VP during the commissioning of the Munguri Bridge that Wesson Tanzania Ltd is planning to sue the Kondoa district council over the debt.
Mkangala said the construction cost of the bridge was 331.7m/-, out of which the district council had defaulted on 158.5m/-.
Dr Shein reminded regional leaders that they have a responsibility to the communities they serve.
Leaders must go to wananchi in the villages; we cant work just by sitting in offices. Many council responsibilities are in villages, where most people live, he said.
In his tour of the region, the VP visited Dodoma Rural, Kondoa and Kongwa districts.
He emphasised development and thanked residents for re-electing.
