By Friday Simbaya, PST, Iringa

The Board Chairman of Iringa Urban Water and Sewerage Authority (IRUWASA), Maj (rtd) Daudi Feruzi, says the authority will soon start providing free water service to vulnerable members of the community in the municipality’s Igumbilo area.

Feruzi said the programme aims at assisting a section of people at the village who cannot afford to pay for water bills, including elders, orphans, people living with HIV/Aids and people living in difficult conditions.

He made the revelation last week during the occasion marking World Water Day that fall on 22nd March every year.
The event was held at Igumbilo Primary School in Iringa Municipalilty and this year’s theme was ’Water and Culture’.

During the occasion the Iringa Urban Member of Parliament, Monica Mbega officiated the event and launched the water project worth 69.1m/-.

A similar water project was launched at Kitwiru village in Kitwiru Ward.

On his part, IRUWASA Managing Director Marcos Mfugale appealed to residents of Igumbilo to work hand in hand with village leaders so as to overcome vandalism of water pipes and meters because it costs the company millions of shillings to install them.

He added that the needy would be paying 10/- per 20-litre bucket of water, adding, ’we are going to prepare identity cards for the needy so that they can have access to clean water at any water points within the locality.

Mfugale further explained that the Authority would ensure the provision of clean water to people.
