Iramba District Council to establish community radio

By Adam Ihucha, Arusha

Iramba District Council in Singida has allocated about 100m/- in its 2006/7 budget for the establishment of community radio.

The district’s Planning Officer, Martin Nkumbi, told The Guardian at the weekend that the proposal would be tabled in the forthcoming full Council meeting for approval.

Nkumbi said 50m/- would be spent on purchasing radio equipment such as transmitters and the remaining would cover operational costs.

’I believe community radio will break communication barriers between the government and its people. 40 years of our independent people in remote areas still rely on foreign radio stations for information,’ Nkumbi revealed.

He said the radio would air programmes that aim at raising awareness of the rural people on wide ranging issues such as the government’s development strategies, education on HIV/AIDS and environmental issues, among others.

’If our dream will come true, we expect our radio to cover around 70 kim diameter so as to reach as many people as possible in Iramba district,’ Nkumbi said.

So far, he said, his district has already received a total of 15m/- grant from two Finland municipals, namely Hartolla and Hauho under their sister-ship relation.

He said the money would be spent on broadcasting training for the radio workers.

Nkumbi also said that International Labour Organization (ILO) through child labour project had showed some interest to assist the Council with some fund for the ambitious project.
