President Jakaya Kikwete has directed owners of private schools to follow approved curricula and employ qualified teachers.

He made the remarks when he officially opened Dr Didas Secondary School at Chanika, on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, on Monday evening.

’It’s dangerous for each school to follow its own curriculum. Build schools, but the curriculum should be one approved by the Ministry of Education,’ he said.

He said education provided in private schools should be qualitative. ’Quality education should match the number of teachers and quantity of equipment to produce better results,’ the President said.

He directed those issued with licences to establish private schools to ensure that education was provided in a good and conducive environment.

President Kikwete commended the board chairman, Dr Didas Masaburi, for his decision to establish a school that aimed to set high standards, saying this was in line with the implementation of the CCM election Manifesto.

Earlier, the Minister for Education and Vocation Training, Margaret Sitta, said all new schools must follow the set standards.

She said the school should provide basic needs to their students in collaboration with teachers and parents.

Dr Masaburi said the school had 130 students and ten teachers. He added, however, that the school was facing a number of challenges, including shortage of water and power and lack of a dispensary.
