President Azali Assoumani of Comoro yesterday opened his country’s new consulate in Dar es Salaam.

The launch ceremony on Kenyatta Drive was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, senior government officials and members of the Diplomatic Corps, among others.

President Assoumani said that opening of the consulate paved the way for the establishment of a fully-fledged embassy in Tanzania.

’The launch of our consulate will be followed by the transformation of this office into an embassy in the near future,’ he said and added that he had appointed Islam Ali Saleh Balhabou Consular General whose task was to represent the interests of Comoro in Tanzania.

President Assoumani also said that the establishment of the consular relations with Tanzania was the formalisation of cordinal relations existing between Comoro and Tanzania.

He commended Tanzania for supporting Comoro before and after the islands gained independence.

Speaking at the same function, Balhabou said the establishment of the consulate would play a crucial role in cementing relations between the two countries, bearing in mind the fact that there are many Tanzanians whose roots are in Comoro.
