The Muslim Council of Tanzania (Bakwata) has suspended seven officials in connection with the controversy surrounding a plot previously owned by the council.
Chief Sheikh Mufti Issa Shaaban Simba told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the council reached the decision after going through the report submitted by a committee appointed to investigate the sale of the plot in Changombe, Dar es Salaam.
Those suspended are Abbas Kihemba, Sheikh Mussa Hemed, Rajab Ndewa, Alhaj Seif Momba, Seif Swai, Sheikh Ali Mbaraka and Alhaj Suleiman Mwenda.
Sheikh Simba said the five-member committee concluded that the disputed plot was legally owned by Bakwata and that some officials had sold it in collusion with employees of the Ministry of Lands and Human Settlements.
He appealed to the government to intervene so that the plot was returned to its rightful owners.
Sheikh Issa said the plot was sold in 1994 and that Bakwata letterheads were used illegally in the deal.
