Cellular phone company Vodacom Tanzania Ltd fulfilled its pledge to contribute 1bn/- to the food relief fund, which it handed to the President yesterday.
According ta a statement issued by the Tanzania Information Services (Maelezo), Vodacom gave the money to President Jakaya Kikwete at State House.
Vodacom\s executive director Romeo Khumalo said during the ceremony that the donation was in response to the pledge made during a function to raise money for the famine kitty on February 25 this year at State House.
President Kikwete said when he received the donation that contributions to the famine kitty would prevent the government from slashing budgetary allocations to ministries.
He added that the donations would also assist the government in the fight against hunger, which threatens the lives of more than 3.7 million people.
He thanked Vodacom for the support, saying the government would continue to improve the environment for doing business in the country, the statement said.
The donation by Vodacom is part of the domestic efforts the government has initiated to alleviate the suffering of wananchi afflicted by famine.
On Monday, Said Salim Bakhressa had handed over 200m/- to President Kikwete for a similar purpose. Last week the United Arab Emirates donated 2bn/-.
