The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) will need to change quite a few things, the most immediate being the various certificates issued to its graduating students, if the varsity’s council grants approval to its proposed new logo.

The proposal of having a new logo for the University has been tendered to the University’s Council for its consideration and subsequent decision.

According to the University’s Convocation Newsletter Vol.8 No.1 issued a fortnight ago, it is proposed that the new logo will enrich the current logo by filling gaps existing in the former.

The current logo has been described as a simple feature depicting through its characteristic black and white background three vital teaching/learning features, namely, a book, a degree cap and a student reading the opened book and wearing the cap.

Above the shield-type logo stands the abbreviated inscription of OUT.

The current logo is defective in that it has no motto statement on it; neither does it show the year the OUT was established nor does it have any colour.

However, the proposed new logo which has been described as colourful, shows the year OUT was established, has the OUT motto inscribed in it and it also features the map of Tanzania.

More importantly, it has also taken on board the name of the University which is written out in full to replace the abbreviated name on the current logo.
