Ilala Municipal Council (IMC) is set to enrol over 3,000 students to join secondary school education during its second selection slated for Wednesday next week.

The enrolment comes in the wake of a three-month ultimatum issued by Prime Minister Edward Lowassa when he addressed Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Regional Commissioners, District Commissioners, mayors, education officers and directors on January 26, ordering that at least 50 percent of students who missed selection be enrolled.

These are candidates who performed well in last year’s Standard Seven examination, but failed to secure Form One selection due to limited chances .

Municipal Information Officer Lucy Semindu said in an interview with The Guardian this week that 10 secondary schools in different municipal districts have already been built.

’Selection of students is complete and on Wednesday next week, students will start attending classes,’ she said.

She mentioned the names of schools as Mwanagati, Kinyerezi, Kimwani, Buyuni, Mwakanga, Majani ya Chai, Ilala, Magoza, Kivule, Kitunda and Mnazi Mmoja.

Semindu said the construction and equipping of the 10 schools cost more than 500m/-.

The entire package included desks and construction of teachers’ houses, she said, adding that the funds were procured from the Ilala Municipal Council.

She said the municipality would enroll 3,459 students out of 5,133 who performed well but could not proceed to Form One.

She added that a total of 6,290 passed, but only 1,157 were enrolled, leaving out 5,133 without the opportunity for secondary school education.

However, when enrolment begins, some 1,674 students who passed would still be left out.

Prior to Premier Lowassa’s ultimatum, Dar es Salaam Region had more than 17,000 students who passed Standard Seven exams but were not selected for secondary school education .
