Medewell Health Centre in Kibaha yesterday operated for free 149 eye-patients, as part of the national efforts to fight blindness and related health complications.

The patients came from Morogoro, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Coast Region, said Amina Ramadhani, the Centre’s Co-ordinator on poverty issues.

’The operations is a major achievement in the country’s struggle against blindness. The centre has been providing free services on monthly basis,’ said the official.

’We are supporting the needy, and call on other institutions to do the same so that we could get the most vulnerable social groups out of the problem,’ she said.

The co-ordinator called on poor people - women, elders and children, with eye problems to come forward for free health services at the centre.

The centre finances its activities through contributions from its members, who, according to the official, were very few considering the number of Tanzanians who need help.

’We ask institutions, organisations, and even individuals to support financially the centre to boost up its capacity to serve as many people as possible,’ said Ramadhani.
