Banks, firms contribute 160m/- towards hunger relief

Chief Executive Officers of Dar es Salaam Round Table, Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL), the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) and National Micro-finance Bank (NMB) yesterday donated a total of 160m/- for the famine relief campaign.
Speaking when presenting a 100m/- cheque to Prime Minister, Edward Lowassa at his office, the NMB Board Chairman, Misheck Ngitunga said the bank was implementing its commitment to the community.
The PM also received a cheque for 20m/- from the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Dar es Salaam Round Table handed in by the lead CEO Ali Mufuruki who congratulated the government for its effort to fight hunger.
Mufuruki said one of the causes of hunger can is land degradation and his group is ready to assist the government by sharing its views on the environment, food security, and the management of natural disasters like famine.
NBC, on its side, gave the PM a cheque for 30m/- as its contribution to the famine relief campaign.
The cheque was handed in by one of the NBC Directors, Ambassador Ami Mpungwe, who said: Our business is making money but we cannot be profit conscious and remain deaf and blind to the community needs.
TTCL Acting Chief Executive Officer, Saidi Mkumba handed a cheque for 10m/- to the PM and said that that they are obliged to heed the Presidents call to local companies, businessmen and individuals to contribute towards combating hunger.
Lowassa thanked all those who have contributed for the famine relief campaign, saying that it is not how much they donate but it is their giving hearts that count in recognition of the number of citizens who suffer from hunger.
The PM said: I thank you for your contribution, and I also thank of citizens for having a loving heart because it shows how much Tanzanians care about each other.
We have got a good support from different people all over and this a good sign of love among us.
Lowassa added that now that almost the whole country is having rains the problem will not be very serious as it was before.
Those who have been provided with grain seeds can get something from these rains.
