Seven charged for illegal possession of firearms

About seven people have been charged in Zanzibar for unlawfully possessing and transporting firearms.

All of them pleaded not guilty before Regional Magistrate, George Kazi at Vuga Court in Zanzibar Stone Town.

The prosecutor, Mohamed Khamis, told the Court on April 6, this year that between 6am and 7am the suspects smuggled into Zanzibar, through Malindi Port, 72 bullets, and two sub-machine guns- SMG (S/Nos 938 and 563010542).

The accused were named as Zubeir Omar Karonga (48) from Same; Othman Chaka Mohamed (23), Ishak Kwayu Hussien (30), Nassor Juma Iddi (30) and Hassan Abdallah Juma (25), the last two are residents of Bagamoyo.

In the list are also Yussuf Maulid Mwalimu (24) and Demetrus Ruwanda (38), both of whom are residents of Zanzibar.The suspects were charged under Section 4 (1) and 34 of Ammunition Act of 1991. All of them after pleading not guilty requested for bail.

According to the existing criminal law, illegal possession of firearms is a non bail-able offence.The case was adjourned to April 20th, this year.
