Four mayors from Youth Councils of Dar es Salaam Municipalities left on Saturday for Helsinki, Finland, for a ten-day study tour.
The Dar es Salaam City Council, Mayor Adam Kimbisa presented air tickets to the youth mayors and their team leader at a short ceremony held in his office on Friday.
He called them to be good ambassadors and bring back reports of their training after their study.
We need your reports of what you have learnt from your colleagues in Helsinki, do not come and just stay without sharing with others what you will learn, said Kimbisa.
Kimbisa also urged the four mayors namely Happy Josephat, Youth Mayor, Dar es Salaam City Youth Council; Dotto Mnyadi, Youth Mayor, Ilala Youth Council; Steven Milambo, Youth Mayor, Kinondoni Youth Council and Athuman Athuman, Youth Mayor, Temeke Youth Council and their team leader, Albert Ikonje from Youth Focal Point, Dar es Salaam City Council to observe discipline while abroad.
Any single mistake you make, would not be for you as a person, nor for your council or Dar es Salaam residents but the whole nation will be affected. Please observe discipline, the City Mayor stressed.
He urged them to work hard and as a team in whatever they do for the better of the nation.
Make sure you do your individual reports since each has his/her own council, and then at night you must meet for a general report for all the people of Tanzania, advised Kimbisa.
He added: You are our ambassadors there. Make sure you bring to Tanzania whatever you learn on how other people operate their councils, and in particular the youth councils, he insisted.
He reminded them that they must be a link between the Youth Councils in Helsinki and those of Tanzania, said Kimbisa.
Speaking at the occasion, the Co-ordinator for the Safer Cities, Dar es Salaam City Council, Anna Mtani said they initiated the study tour for the youth mayors for them to learn and be able to teach others in the country.
We want them to learn this as a pilot study, since Dar es Salaam is the only city that the youth have already formed their councils.
They must teach others when they come back, she said.
Mtani said the main thing was to empower the youth to effectively handle their councils with a vision.
We had already initiated the formation of the councils, now we cannot only leave them alone, we need to empower them so that the become instrumental to they nation, keeping in mind that many regional councils have not established youth councils, she noted.
According to Mtani, Joun Hemberg, a Finnish national, working with Safer Cities, Dar es Salaam, co-ordinated the study. Hemberg now works with UNICEF.
Mtani said the Finnish Embassy in Tanzania has shouldered air tickets and the host, the City Council of Helsinki will take care of accommodation and upkeep.
On its part, the Dar es Salaam City Council gave them subsistence allowances for their stay in Finland.
