NCCR-Mageuzi calls for single pensions fund

Oppositon party, NCCR-Mageuzi, has called for changes in pension funds management to enable workers earn dividends annually on their subscriptions.

Addressing a Press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday, NCCR-Mageuzi chairman James Mbatia said there was a need for changes in the law governing social security funds to allow members get dividends besides having a say in management of their funds.

Tanzania has separate laws governing the operations of four social security funds – the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Parastatal Pension Fund (PPF), Local Government Pension Fund (LGPF) and Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF).

NCCR-Mageuzi proposes that all laws should be replaced by a single statute that allows workers and their trade unions to have a say in the management of the funds, including getting dividends annually.

’’The social security funds should stop using workers’ funds for the benefit of a few individuals in the government. The funds must be reinvested in the form of company shares to enable workers to get dividends,’’ Mbatia said in a party statement he read to reporters.

He added: ’’The pension funds must be amalgamated and harmonised in addition to empowering trade unions to have a say in the management of the pension funds.’’

Mbatia also called for further amendments in labour laws, including Trade Union Registration Act to strengthen trade unions for the benefit of workers.

He said this month’s May Day celebrations were meaningless to workers as the state and private companies used it to encroach on workers’ rights.

Mbatia also said his party’s National Executive Committee had embarked on organisational restructuring leading to the appointment of new leaders, including party trustees Nakazaeli Tenga (chairperson of the board of trustees) and Emmanuel Sirikwa (member).

Other appointments to the board of trustees are Samuel Ruhuza, Mosi Faki, Akimu Kajuni and Hashim Rungwe.

He said the party’s NEC had appointed Didas Mfupe new deputy secretary-general for Tanzania Mainland and new commissioners for Shinyanga and Iringa regons, Thomas Ngungi and Hezron Kileka, respectively.

Also appointed as provincial party secretaries are Ali Said Khamis (Chakechake), Sadik Rwizangoga (Bukoba-Urban), Waalid Mohamed (Mtambile), Andreas Maswa (Tarime) and Yusuf Balozi (Mtwara-urban).

The appointments include Michael Mabula (Nzega), Kalipeni Koba (Iringa-Urban), Pius Salu (Bumbuli) and Ali Juma Ali (Wawi).
