Makamba orders Dar residents out of flood-prone valleys

By Simon Mhina

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Yusuf Makamba has warned people living in valleys and flood-prone areas to move out or else they will be forcibly ejected by the government.

Makamba said the government would resort to force following resistance by some Dar es Salaam residents to move out of what housing experts and city planners say are potentially dangerous places.

’’The government has broken the silence. We cannot tolerate them anymore,’’ Makamba told reporters yesterday.

’’The government will not risk people’s lives,’’ he said.
He said the eviction exercise would be conducted quickly and under tight security to avoid a possible return by ejected residents.

He advised the residents to leave before the operation starts.

’’They should voluntarily get out of the places because they don’t know the day or time of their eviction,’’ Makamba said.

He added: ’’We cannot specify time and day as the exercise will be conducted abruptly.’’

The RC blames the residents for resisting directives by regional authorities to leave the valleys voluntarily.

He directed the Kinondoni, Temeke and Ilala municipal authorities to make the residents aware of the impending eviction exercise to avoid loss of property.
