EU to extend 69.5bn/- budget support

The European Union (EU) will grant Tanzania 69.5bn/- (Euro 49.4 m) as general budgetary support to boost integrated approaches that link the transport sector, rural development, food availability, good governance and education.
The grants would also go towards the fight against HIV/Aids, supporting the cause of good governance as well as local governments, according to the Head of EU delegation in the country, Ambassador Frans Baan.
Speaking early in the week, Baan said the funds would be approved in the next three to four months.
He said EU was committed to working together with Tanzania to achieve peace, security and sustainable development.
EU is committed to extend its support to the countrys budget in order to help the nation attain her objectives of boosting up the economy so as to reduce poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals as outlined in the National Strategy for Poverty Reduction and Growth (MKUKUTA), he said.
He added: EU is committed to extending budget support to Tanzania to explore integrated approaches that links the transport sector, rural development, food availability, good governance and education.
All partners have identified plans to increase business through regional co-operation and integrations. The East African Community currently receives support for institutional capacity while Tanzania receives technical assistance in order to help her produce high quality goods, which can compete in the world market, he said.
EU is currently drawing up a new cycle of programming under 10th European Development Fund, which will commence in 2007, he said.
