About 25 heart patients will be operated on at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region this week.

In the fourth phase of open heart surgery operations at the referral hospital, 14 surgeons from the US, led by Dr Duane Cook will work with 30 surgeons from KCMC, led by Prof Samwel Chugulu.

A press statement issued by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Aloyce Masao says that consultant surgeons from US will team up with local surgeons in the operations.

’There will be 14 surgeons from US who will work with 30 surgeons from KCMC. Patients with congenial and rheumatic heart diseases as well as major blood vessels’ problems will be operated on,’ says the statement.

The first phase of the operations (open heart surgery) was conducted in 2004. About seven patients were operated on then while the second phase was done last year, in April.
Eight patients were attended to.

The third phase was conducted last October and about 25 patients benefited.
