The Zanzibar College of Health Science is unable to source qualified candidates for admission.
The college secretary, Mohamed Abdallah said due to poor standards, the institution was still struggling for recognition by the National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA).
Speaking at a meeting to introduce the college council to the Health minister, Sultan Mohamed Mugheiry, Dr Mohamed said one of the challenges the institution has had is very few well qualified students to join the college.
He said this had delayed recognition process by NECTA.
We have been having the problem of lack of reliable transport for students and teachers, insufficient teachers, and funds to run the college, therefore we ask the government to help us solve the problems, Dr Mohamed appealed.
Head of the curriculum department at the institution, Jokha Khamis said the medical training facility was established in early 1930s to train nurses, midwives, and clinical officers, has been enrolling about 130 students annually.
The college, was up-graded in November 1989, and christened Zanzibar College of Health Science, and we currently have 360 students with more than 65 per cent being females.
But unfortunately, we had few well qualified candidates, Khamis regretted.
