By Gideon Mwakanosya, PST, Songea

A police constable with Lusewa Police Station in Namtumbo District, Ruvma Region, E1540 PC Elias, (38), on Friday appeared before the Ruvuma Resident Magistrate’s Court charged with illegal possession of a sub machine gun (SMG) and 100 rounds of ammunition.

The prosecutor, Inspector of Police Peter Kubezya alleged before Resident Magistrate John Limboko that between April 1 and 28, this year, at Lilambo village the accused was found in possession of 100 bullets and one SMG without a valid license.

The accused denied the charge and asked the court to grant him bail.

However, the prosecution objected to the bail request and tendered an affidavit signed by the Officer Commanding, Criminal Investigations Department (OCCID), Songea District, Cyprian Kambelenje, arguing that the accused would interfere with investigations if granted bail.
The prosecution also alleged that the accused would jump bail.

On his part, the accused asked the court to consider his bail application as his advocate was out of town.

The magistrate agreed with the accused’s request.
