Women MPs for representation in foreign travel

Effectively from end month, every delegation of Members of Parliament in foreign missions will have to constitute about 30 per cent of female parliamentarians, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Samuel Sitta, said yesterday in Dar es Salaam.
Delivering a keynote address to a three-day seminar for female MPs, he said the new arrangement would promote gender representation.
The new directive will be followed by a delegation set to leave Dar es Salaam for US at the end the month for HIV/Aids conference.
He cited a conference held in Nairobi recently women MPs were poorly represented.
’There was only one female MP in the six-member delegation,’ Sitta said.
Commenting on MPs’ work offices, the speaker said his office would ensure construction of offices in their respective constituencies including special seat MPs.
For example, from the new Bunge structure, Sitta said, all regions will be allocated offices.
Earlier, the chairperson of the Tanzania Women Parliamentary Group, (TWPG) Anna Makinda, commended the speaker for support extended by his office in assisting the seminar.
Among other issues addressed during the seminar included an analysis of bills tabled in parliament, construction of questions in the House and administrative skills.
