Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Development Dr Maua Daftari has asked Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Kilimanjaro and Addis Ababa airports authorities to bolster security to prevent theft and loss of travellers property.
Dr Daftari, who held a meeting yesterday with the directors of Tanzania Airport Authority, Swissport Tanzania Limited, Ethiopian Airlines and Ministry of Infrastructure Development senior officials, said that it was imperative that airports security improve.
She said improved security is a long term solution to persistent luggage loss and pilferage.
The meeting was in response to a statement by Ethiopian Airlines regional manager Martha Tilaun, who last Sunday blamed the loss of travellers luggage on Swissport (Tanzania) Limited.
Swissport has been contracted by Tanzania Airports Authority to provide aviation services.
Swissport (Tanzania) Limited executive director Gaudence Temu said that his firm had improved security at the airport and blamed the airlines for laxity, which results in loss of luggage.
The Deputy Minister admitted that it was difficult to pinpoint the source of the problem, but said lack of co-ordination among various agencies at the airports had created loopholes through which goods are stolen.
The authorities at the Addis Ababa Airport and their counterparts in Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports should co-operate and solve the problem, she said.
Present also at the meeting was the Director General of the Tanzania Airports Authority, Prosper Tesha.
Dr Daftari said that the Tanzania Airport Authority, Swissport and Ethiopian Airlines should restore efficiency at the airports.
I am sure if you co-operated, these problems would be solved once and for all, she said.
