Unknown people in Mtwara Region have surrendered 17 guns and 26 rounds of ammunition following the ongoing crackdown on criminals in the region that began a few days ago, police said yesterday.

The Mtwara Regional Police Commander, Luther Mbutu, said yesterday that the firearms and ammunition were surrendered at the Nanyamba Police Ptation in Tandahimba District and at Kitangali village office in Newala District.

The RPC said the criminals, whose identity is still unknown, surrendered the weapons in fear of being nabbed by the law enforcers, who were carrying out a house-to-house search.

During the search police arrested 20 people in connection with drug deals.

The RPC said eight of them were nabbed for possession of banned human drugs, five with 410 litres of the locally brewed illicit liquor (gongo) and five others with 74 kilogrammes of bhang.

Meanwhile, police in the region have impounded a 718-litre consignment of fuel that was reportedly being smuggled to a neighbouring country.

RPC Mbutu said law enforcers came across the smugglers, as they were about to accomplish their mission at Kilambo on the Tanzanian boarder with the neighbouring Mozambique. However, they all managed to escape.

He said that police had taken the impounded fuel consignment to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) office in Mtwara where experts will determine its actual cost.
