Norway reaffirms economic support to Tanzania

The Norwegian government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen cordial relations with Tanzania after the country smooth change of leadership that brought to power the fourth phase government of President Jakaya Kikwete.

This was said on Thursday in Cape Town, South Africa by the Norwegian Minister for International Development, Erick Solheim when he visited President Jakaya Kikwete and held talks with him.

The discussion was aimed at developing and maintaining diplomatic relations and development co-operation between the two countries.

The dialogue was also attended by the Tanzanian Minister for Planning and Economic Empowerment, Dr Juma Ngasongwa.

Solheim, who is in Cape Town attending the World Economic Forum for Africa told Kikwete who is also among the few invited presidents that, regardless of Norway having a new government, her policies on co-operation with Tanzania have not changed.

He therefore insisted that his government would continue supporting Tanzania aimed at bringing sustainable development between the two countries.

’’Norway is happy with development strategies being implemented by President Kikwete in different areas of the economy,’’ he said.

On corruption, Solheim said his government was satisfied with the war on the vice and offered to support the government of Tanzania.

He also hailed the President for showing his commitment to solve Union matters .

Solheim said his country was ready to bring experts needed any time the government of Tanzania may need them.

On his part, President Kikwete expressed gratitude to the government of Norway for giving developmental assistance to Tanzania for over 40 years.

The President, mentioned areas that need closer co-operation in their implementation as construction of a new university and the health sector.
He said the government of Tanzania alone knows how big the problems are.
