The Executive Chairman of Tanzania Commission for AIDS, Major General (rtd) Herman Lupogo yesterday launched a four-year African Regional Capacity Building Network (ARCAN) for HIV/AIDS Project in Dar es Salaam.
Launching the project, Lupogo stated that the project would solely focus on training of medical practitioners in three African countries. He named the three African countries to participate in the Project as Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.
Medical practitioners who would undergo such courses include physicians, nurses, laboratory technicians, counselor supervisors together with HIV/Aids program managers, he said.
The project would support the implementation of short-term non-diploma training courses for health care practitioners at various levels, he added.
He said the expectation is that, under the four-year implementation programme, trainers would also impart similar knowledge on best management of HIV/Aids, improved its quality as well as coverage of national prevention, treatment, care, together with support programmes and stronger sub-regional response towards the problem.
Apart from launching the ARCAN, Lupogo opened a meeting for representatives from Partner Training Institutions (PTIs) and officials of the project itself.
Participants came from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI), Aga Khan University School of Nursing, Kenya Association of Professional Counsellors, Kenya Medical Association and Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute.
According to the TACAID boss, ARCAN has planned a number of short courses and trainings this year.
Courses for HIV/Aids Programme managers in Tanzania would start next Monday and end in September.
Similar courses for nurses are about to commence at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing from July 17, up to August 25. Courses for counsellors and laboratory technicians are to take place from August to September.
Medical doctors, pharmacists, dentists, physicians and specialists are to attend training from next month to September.
ARCAN project is funded by the World Bank and Tanzania government has been chosen to be the recipient of the funds on behalf of the other two countries.
