UDSM’s Prof Chachage is dead

The Chairman of the University of Dar es Salaam Academic Staff Assembly (UDASA), Prof Chachage Sethy Chachage is dead.

According to a statement issued by University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Vice Chancellor Prof. Matthew Luhanga, Prof. Chachage died on Sunday at around 11.00 pm while on duty in Kibaha.

’The Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, Prof. Metthew Luhanga regrets to announce the untimely death of Prof. Seith L. Chachage who passed away on July 9, 2006 at around 23.00 hours,’ reads the statement.

Until his demise, he was UDASA Chairman and the head of Sociology Department at the institution.

According to the statement released yesterday, burial arrangements are being made at his residence in Changanyikeni, in Dar es Salaam.

Prof. Chachage is survived by four children . The late don was born in Mtwango Village, Njombe District, on January 8, 1955.

He obtained his BA degree in Sociology in 1982 before pursuing an MA (Sociology) at UDSM in 1983.

He was recruited as a Tutorial Assistant in 1982 and promoted to Assistant Lecturer in 1983 and Lecturer in 1986 after obtaining his Ph.D at Glasgow University.

Prof. Chachage was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in 1989 before being promoted to an Associate Professor in 1995 and Full Professor of Sociology in 2003.

One of his students, Lydia Shekigenda remembers the late don for his brilliant lectures on social science research methods.

His colleagues at UDSM remember him for his critical thinking when presenting papers and discussing various academic issues within and outside university platforms.

Prof. Haroub Othman of the Institute of Development Studies, described the late Prof. Chachage as a senior academician who was rare in terms of academic excellence.

Prof. Othman said for most of developing countries like Tanzania, it was very rare to groom an academician with the qualities of the late Prof. Chachage.

As chairman of UDASA, the late Prof. Chachage was bold in taking constructive opinions to improve the welfare of academicians.
