Police in Mwanza have uncovered a hideout believed to be the den for criminals who feature prominently on their list of wanted people.

Interviewed by telephone, Mwanza Regional Police Commander,Zelothe Stephen said yesterday that the hideout also served as the warehouse of stolen items.

The police chief said the warehouse was part of underground rooms in the house of one Paul Kang’ese Kasinga on Mwananchi Street on the outskirts of Mwanza city.

The RPC said parts of Nyakato are crime-ridden. He said that, when the police raided the house of Kasinga following a tip off, they discovered an exit to the underground floor that was covered by a floor carpet to obscure it.

The underground room was reserved for the owner of the house, he said.

The RPC said the suspect had been on the run after being implicated in some crime alongside his two Kenyan accomplices – Clement Kariuki and Benjamin Wanjohi. They two have already been nabbed.

”The exit to the underground chambers was cleverly covered with a carpet to remove traces of their existence,” he said.

Without specifying the number, the police chief said that in one of the wardrobes in the underground rooms they found firearms and several rounds of ammunition.

Whenever the police raided his house looking for him, said the RPC, the suspect would slip into the underground room.

He said the arrest of Kasinga and his accomplices was facilitated by wananchi who are determined to root out crime from their neighborhood.
