Last week the Zanzibar government appointed new executive committee members of the Zanzibar National Council Sports (ZNSC).
The Minister for Information, Culture and Sports, Ali Juma Shamuhuna, said he appointed the new members for the betterment of the sports in the Isles.
He said Article 8 of the Zanzibar Sports Council constitution gave him the mandate to change the council members if they dont deliver.
Shamuhuna appointed Sherry Khamis as the new chairperson. Khamis, who was the Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Netball Association (Chaneza), replaces Abdulghani Msoma.
Khamis Ali Mzee Kichole is the Secretary General. Kichole is also the Manager of Amaan Stadium.
Executive Committee members are Hamza Hassan Juma, Suleiman Mahmoud Jabiri, Ally Saleh, Kombo Hassan Juma and Amran Masoud Amran.
The Minister has also appointed Mzee Zam Ali the Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA).
Zam Ali replaces Mwinyijuma Haji Saadati. Before the appointment, Zam Ali was ZNSC Executive Secretary.
We, therefore, hail the Zanzibar government for making the changes because former officials appeared dormant.
The disbanded council had been toothless and failed to help the development of various sports associations in the islands.
The national associations such as the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) have not been obeying directives of the ZNSC.
For example, we saw ZFA refusing to obey the directives of the ZNSC in their postponed general election.
The Council ordered ZFA to amend its constitution so that it goes with the FIFA constitution by including the views of stakeholders.
Premier league clubs wanted ZFA to have a constitution which allows their representatives to vote for the associations leaders.
ZFA refused to do that and carried on with the preparations of the elections although they were later postponed following the low turn out of the candidates.
We, therefore, ask the minister to give the ZNSC full mandate of dealing with sports associations like ZFA.
We hope that the new leadership will not allow ZFA to go on with the preparation of the elections unless it has a constitution, which carries opinions of stakeholders.
We also expect ZSC to promote all dormant associations like table tennis, golf, chess etc.
Only three associations have been so active in Zanzibar - basketball, athletics and netball.
We wish the new ZNSC all the best.
