By Privates Lipili, PST, Dodoma

The Ministry of Energy and Minerals will probe claims that the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) was reluctant to connect new customers in the town of Kahama.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Minerals, Laurance Masha made the promise while answering a question by James Lembeli (Kahama, CCM) who had wanted to know why it had taken more than five years for new customers in Kahama town to get connected.

He also wanted to know why Tanesco had not supplied power to villages close to Nyihongo and Mhungula plants, which are only 1 and 2 kilometres away from Kahama town.

The Deputy Minister told Parliament that between January and December 2005 Tanesco in Kahama received 270 applications, but only 240 applicants were connected.

He said that the areas could not be reached due to lack of materials to bring closer the main grid of 33 KV, installation of the transformer, and ways distribute electricity from the main line.

He said that government had allocated funds in the coming financial year to connect 17 customers of Nyihongo and 3 customers from Mhungula who had applied to be connected.
