The Land Survey Assessment Committee has said that more than 300 plots of land have been snatched illegally by some top officials in the lands department.

Information from a committee member alleges the plots were deliberately distributed for the sole purpose of selling them dubiously.

The 300 plots are part of the 600 plots which were offered this year at Mji Mpya Tunguu, in Southern Unguja Region.

The committee so far has failed to arrest the culprits because wrong names have been used in the offer, the member, who preferred anonymity said .

”Owners of the 300 plots have not shown up because the distributors are the land officials themselves,” said one committee member.

The member alleged that some people, including ministers have been allocated between five to 20 plots.

The plots were now people’s ’projects’ whereby one plot is sold at between 1.5m/- and 3.5m/-, he said.

Following the committee’s report, Minister for Water, Minerals and Lands Mansour Yussuf Himid ,suspended the distribution of the plots until the investigation is over.

”It is still too early to talk about the matter until the committee hands over its report,” said the minister.
